The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has urged candidates taking this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination to uphold high standards of integrity and excellence during the week-long exams.
The examination, which is scheduled to start Monday, August 7, 2023, and end Friday, August 11, 2023, will see over 600,000 students nationwide sit for the exams at various schools and centers.
While wishing the candidates well, GNECC reminded them about the importance of the exams and the need for them to eschew any acts of malpractice.
“The BECE is a significant milestone in the educational journey of every Ghanaian child. It serves as a gateway to higher education opportunities and future career prospects. GNECC recognizes the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by both students and their teachers in preparing for this examination”, GNECC noted in a statement on August 3.
“We would like to emphasize the importance of upholding ethical standards and avoiding any form of exam malpractice. Cheating not only undermines the integrity of the examination process but also hampers the development of a fair and merit-based education system. GNECC urges all candidates to rely on their knowledge, skills, and preparation to excel in their exams”, the Coalition stressed.
GNECC further called on the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) to ensure transparent, leakage-free exams by deploying effective security measures, including technology.
“The leakage of exam questions not only compromises the fairness of the examination but also erodes public trust in the education system. We urge WAEC to strengthen its systems, employ advanced technologies, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure a secure and transparent examination process.”
The Coalition charged all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, government agencies, and civil society, to work collaboratively towards providing quality pre-tertiary education.
