Four (4) health sector unions have joined the fray of government employees agitating for payment of the 20% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifes Association (GRNMA), Health Services Workers Union (HSWU), and the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) have expressed disappointment in the government for not giving them a favourable response to the demands.
In a statement signed by the leaders of the various associations, the unions referred to a recent meeting between the government and teacher unions that ended in stalement, and stated its intention to embark on a “series of actions” if their demands are not met by July 22nd, 2022.
Accordingly, the unions revealed that if their demands are not met, from July 25th to July 27th they will wear red arm or wrist bands to their facilities; from July 28th to July 31st, outpatient department (OPD) services will be withdrawn; and from August 1st, both OPD and inpatient services will be withdrawn.
The government has expressed the view that the time is not right for organized labour to request the COLA.
The President, in his Eid Speech at Independence Square on Monday, appealed to striking teachers to call off their strike for the sake of BECE candidates.
