It has emerged that the government has ordered the release of an additional sum of GHC 25 million as seed money to the National Cathedral Secretariat for the construction of the controversial national cathedral.

Per an uncovered letter on social media on Thursday, the Minister of Finance had instructed the Controller and Accountant General to credit RIBADE Limited an amount of GHC 25 million, representing outstanding claims to be paid to the company.

Sections of Ghanaians have expressed their dissatisfaction about the development. According to them, there are pressing challenges the country faces that should be at the top of the radar of government priorities.

The Minority in Parliament have also questioned the supposed shady handling of the project. On Thursday, they inquired how much the state had injected into the project.

However, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has, since the announcement of the project in 2017, indicated he wishes to execute the project in fulfilment of a promise he made to God during the 2016 elections.

So far, contributions from private individuals, corporate bodies and churches have been received into a fund established by the Secretariat.

The US $350 million project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2024.
