S/R: YEA disburses funds to 5 garment and textile trainers

The Youth Employment Agency [YEA] in the Savannah Region has disbursed funding support to five (5) selected trainers for the Garment and Textile module of YEA. The Youth in Garment and Textile Module was launched on August 14, 2023, in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, to create sustainable employment opportunities. The module aims at bridging the skill gaps as well as creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people interested in tailoring or dressmaking, which ultimately contributes towards growth and development.

The module has been designed carefully to afford beneficiaries the opportunity to receive in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in various aspects of tailoring and dressmaking, including fabric selection, cutting techniques, sewing, garment construction, pattern making, and alterations.

Mr. Raphael Akati Mahama, the Savannah Regional YEA director, has successfully overseen numerous modules and opportunities for young people in his region. Coupled with man-hunting for jobs in all sectors of the economy to alleviate the youth of joblessness, the success story has now reached a crescendo where the youth are now empowered not only to own jobs but to become employers and contribute to central government efforts in that direction.

In all, eighteen thousand, five hundred, and seventy Ghana cedis [18,570.00] each were received by the five [5] beneficiary companies in the Savannah Region. Mr. Raphael Akati Mahama, on behalf of YEA CEO Mr. Kofi Baah Agyepong, presented checks to the five selected trainers for the Garment and Textile Module yesterday [02/11/2024]. The YEA has already exceeded its 2023 target of 80,000 jobs to about 84,000 and is still counting before the end of the year, 2033.

The trainers are provided with life-changing support to expand their tailoring shops and create an environment that enables them to train three (3) apprentices each for a two-year period, with monthly allowances paid to the trainees by the Youth Employment Agency. A new UNDP study that analysed the drivers of vulnerability to violent extremism and radicalization in the northern regions of Ghana revealed youth unemployment as the most common driver.

The president’s vision of sustainable job creation for the youth is directly aligned with this significant step towards addressing skill gaps and improving employment prospects for the youth. In the past six years, the government has embarked on programmes aimed at improving a lot of things, including the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme [NEIP] and other private-led initiatives centred on young businesses and support for start-ups.

The S/R YEA Director admonished the trainers to ensure the money is used strictly for its intended purpose. He expressed how privileged it feels to be part of the life-changing stories of young people in his home region. Beneficiary companies in the Savannah Region include;
