The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education-Ghana (PRINCOF) says they can no longer afford to feed trainees at colleges of education considering the high cost of food supplies.
In a statement on Monday, issued by its executive secretary, Dr. Harriet Naki Amui, PRINCOF indicated that effective Monday, November 7, 2022, it will cease providing food to the trainees, which currently stands at GHC 6.50 per trainee.
The principals lamented the high cost of food and the high level of indebtedness as the reasons for their decision.
“Prices of all food items have shot up astronomically, and food suppliers have refused to supply any food items to colleges because of their indebtedness to these suppliers.”
They further indicated that an initial request to the government for an upward review of their grant has not been approved.
In light of the above, we request that PRINCOF be given permission to ask students to fend for themselves.
“This is to ensure that the already stretched academic year is not disrupted,” the statement added.
The Ministry of Education is yet to officially respond to the concerns of the principals.
