Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday hosted a breakfast meeting with the five presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at his Nima residence, in a move aimed at promoting unity and harmony within the party ahead of the upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The meeting, described as cordial and forward-looking, brought together leading figures of the party, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, Hon. Dr Bryan Acheampong, Hon. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
In his remarks, former President Akufo-Addo expressed appreciation to the aspirants for honouring his invitation despite their tight campaign schedules. He said their presence “was a testament to their shared commitment to the collective good and future prospects of the NPP.”
“I have worked closely with each of you and hold you in high esteem,” he told the gathering, noting that their candidatures reflect both merit and service to the party and the nation. He urged the aspirants to conduct “a healthy, issue-based campaign” that focuses on policies and vision rather than personal attacks.
Akufo-Addo stressed that his overriding priority is the unity and credibility of the party’s internal processes, saying:
“My primary commitment is to the unity of the NPP, the credibility of the process, and to working towards a properly energised and rallied party, fully prepared to secure victory in the 2028 elections.”
In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, all five aspirants reportedly assured the former president of their resolve to maintain decorum in their campaigns and to rally behind whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer. They also pledged to encourage their supporters to uphold peace and unity after the primaries.
The meeting was attended by senior party figures, including Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders; Mr Danquah Smith Buttey, Acting National Chairman; Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary; Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader; and Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, former Chief of Staff.
The former president thanked the aspirants and party executives for their engagement, urging the leadership to ensure a credible and transparent process that would strengthen post-primary cohesion.
The breakfast meeting, political observers note, underscores Akufo-Addo’s continuing influence within the NPP and his focus on steering the party towards a united front as it prepares for another electoral contest in 2028.
