The National Communications Authority (NCA) has directed the immediate suspension of operations of more than 60 FM radio stations across Ghana over regulatory violations.
While the full list of affected stations has not been officially published, reports suggest that pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) outlets Asaase 99.5 FM and Wontumi 95.9 FM may be among those impacted.
Both stations have been off-air since Thursday morning, fueling speculation about their inclusion in the enforcement action.
Asaase Radio is associated with Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent NPP figure, while Wontumi FM is owned by Bernard Antwi Bosiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
According to a statement issued by the NCA, the suspensions target stations found to be in breach of licensing requirements under the Electronic Communications Act.
The Authority cited reasons such as operating with expired authorisations, failure to commence operations within the legally mandated timeframe, and non-fulfilment of conditions tied to provisional authorisations.
Specifically, 28 stations were said to be operating with expired licences, while 14 had obtained authorisation but failed to begin broadcasting within two years.
Another 13 are currently operating under provisional authorisations after making the necessary payments, and 7 have paid fees but are yet to complete outstanding requirements for final authorisation as outlined in Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.
The NCA emphasized its commitment to upholding regulatory standards in the broadcasting sector and urged all operators to ensure full compliance with licensing obligations.
It also assured the public that monitoring and enforcement activities will continue to preserve the integrity of Ghana’s communications landscape.
