Captain Andre Ayew has been left out of Black Stars coach Otto Addo’s 26-man roster for the World Cup qualifying match against Mali and the Central African Republic.
Otto Addo did not provide reasons for ignoring Andre Ayew but said he had personally spoken to Andre before announcing his decision.
Otto Addo disclosed further that Andre was not in agreement with his decision, however.
“I had a long talk with André and gave him why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and don’t like to disclose information about our discussions. This is the decision we took, and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have great respect for him,” Addo said in a press conference on Wednesday.
On June 6, 2024, the Black Stars will play Mali in Bamako’s Stade 26 Mars. In addition, on June 10, 2024, the team will host the Central African Republic at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Addo has called up players such as Brandon Thomas-Asante of West Bromwich Albion and Ibrahim Sulemana for the first time for the senior national squad.
Thomas Partey is set to lead the team as skipper, as revealed by the coach in his press conference.
In a related event, the family of Andre Ayew is set to meet and take a decision over his exclusion from the Stars squad by Otto Addo.
According to Accra-based Angel FM, a member of the Ayew family will issue a statement following the meeting.
Ayew has been criticised by some Ghanaian football followers for failing to provide effective leadership to the senior national soccer team, resulting in their recent poor tournament outings.
