The New Patriotic Party says some of its members who have joined its exited former flagbearer aspirant, Alan Kyerematen, have forfeited their membership in the party.
In a statement on Monday, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua said that the recent activities of its former Communications Director Yaw Buaben Asamoa, former General Secretary Nana Ohene Ntow, former presidential staffer Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, and former Minister of State Boniface Abubakar Siddique in promoting the candidature of Mr. Kyerematen are contrary to the constitution of the NPP.
According to the statement, although the aforementioned persons still hold themselves as members of the NPP, their actions are in the party’s constitution, particularly Articles 3(5)(A)(4) and 3(9)(1) of the party’s constitution.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 3(5)(A)(4) of the NPP Constitution enjoins all members of the Party to ‘abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party’. In addition, Article 3(9)(1) of the Constitution provides as follows:
“A Member of the Party who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the Party, or who joins or declares his or her support for another political party or for an independent candidate, when the Party has sponsored a candidate in a general or by-election, automatically forfeits his or her membership in the Party”.
“In line with these constitutional provisions, it is the view of the NPP that Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, and Buaben Asamoa have automatically forfeited their membership in the party. They are, therefore, no longer members of the Party”, the statement read in part.
The party also called for focus and unity among its ranks ahead of the 2024 general elections.
During the final funeral rites of former first lady Theresa Kufuor in Kumasi on Saturday, some sections of followers of Mr. Kyerematen and supporters of the NPP hooted at each other in the full glare of mourners.
Mr. Kyerematen announced his resignation from the NPP on September 25, 2023, to contest as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 election under the newly formed Movement for Change.
He mentioned successive unfair processes and bias by senior officers of the party in favour of the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the reasons for his resignation.
