The government has launched an emergency contact centre for those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage to request urgent support and provide relevant feedback.
Announcing the new contact centre, Deputy Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar said this was part of the government’s efforts to provide immediate support to individuals and households in the affected communities.
Persons who need to make any inquiries or request support as a result of the flood may contact the centre by dialling 311 on all networks.
Fatimatu affirmed that the government is fully responsible for its obligations under the dam spillage in a quest to restore the livelihoods of the flood victims.
“Government takes full responsibility to restore communities to ensure that people are safe, and that is exactly what VRA and NADMO have deployed personnel to ensure that we reach that,” the deputy minister said in a meeting with the press on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Fatimatu Abubakar also acknowledged the efforts of private individuals and organisations in providing relief and other support to the affected communities.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer at VRA, Ing. Edward Obeng Kenzo, commiserated with the victims of the flood while assuring that his outfit would collaborate with the government to ensure that all victims received the needed assistance.
He stated that so far, VRA has committed some GHC 20 million to support victims of the flood, adding that the amount may be increased as and when necessary.
Ing. Kenzo also outlined some interventions the authority has made following the incident, including food and water, medical services, bedding, sanitation, and electricity.
He further revealed that VRA is working with the government and other agencies to map out strategies to contain future spillages, but confirmed that there will be no additional spillages anytime soon.
