The Electoral Commission has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Tamale Central Constituency on Tuesday, 30 September 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the EC said the vacancy had been declared in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election within 60 days after a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.
The Commission indicated that nomination forms for the contest will be available for download from its official website, www.ec.gov.gh, between 19 August and 10 September.
Completed forms are to be submitted to the Returning Officer at the Tamale Metropolitan Office from Monday, 8 September to Wednesday, 10 September, during working hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.
Prospective candidates are required to have their nomination forms endorsed by a proposer and a seconder, along with the signatures of 18 registered voters in the constituency as assenting supporters. Each submission must also include two recent postcard-sized bust photographs against a red background.
The filing fee has been set at GHC10,000 per candidate, with a concessionary rate of GHC7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities. All completed nomination forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate.
The Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa, urged the public and stakeholders to take note of the guidelines and timelines.
