Ghanaians urged to properly manage waste to lessen methane gas emissions

Lead researcher at Greener Impact International, Timothy Appiah Nti, has called on Ghanaians to manage their waste well at home and at the workplace to help reduce the emission of methane gas into the atmosphere.

He shared that methane gas is the second most abundant gas in the atmosphere, attracting the most heat in the air and the world.

Methane gas, along with carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and other CFC gases, is the primary contributor to the current global temperature, according to him, emphasising that it is a very dangerous gas.

Further, Mr. Nti discussed the harmful effects of methane gas and suggested measures to reduce its emissions, stating that as humans continue to eat and live on Earth, the gas will continue to be generated.

“What I want Ghanaians to know is that so long as we remain humans and eat, drink, and live on this earth, we will generate the gas all the time. But then the only way we can lessen its impact is to know how to properly manage waste in and out of the house,” Mr. Nti said.

He noted that their campaign against methane gas emissions aims to combat the harmful effects of the gas on the environment, including death.

“As you all have witnessed, we’ve launched our campaign against methane gas emissions, and this gas is one of the gases in the air. If the world becomes heated and the heat is emitting back into the air, it holds the most heat, and this is why you mostly hear about wildfires and the hottest day on earth, which recorded people who were killed from heatwaves. All these are effects of the emission of greenhouse gases.”

“It is the second most abundant gas, though carbon dioxide is the first most abundant gas. Methane is able to warm 80 times more than carbon dioxide,” he emphasised.

Mr. Nti made these remarks on 6th August 2024, in Accra, when the organisation launched a campaign against methane gas and its effect on humankind.
