Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant as part of planned maintenance activities intended to improve water supply operations in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the company, the facility will be taken out of service on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The shutdown will allow engineers to carry out critical technical works aimed at strengthening the performance and reliability of the plant.

In a statement issued by GWL’s Communications Department, the company said the maintenance forms part of ongoing efforts to safeguard its water infrastructure and ensure consistent service delivery to customers. The exercise is expected to result in a temporary interruption of water supply to several communities across Accra and its environs.

Areas likely to be affected include Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka La Paz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, as well as surrounding neighbourhoods.

GWL management indicated that arrangements have been put in place to ensure the work is completed within the scheduled time. The statement noted that technical teams will be on-site throughout the period to ensure a smooth process and a prompt restoration of water supply once the maintenance is completed.

Residents, businesses and institutions in the affected areas have been advised to store adequate water ahead of the shutdown to reduce inconvenience during the 12-hour period.

Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, described the maintenance exercise as necessary for sustaining the company’s infrastructure and improving overall service delivery. He said all required resources have been deployed to complete the work as planned.

GWL apologised for the inconvenience the shutdown may cause and appealed to customers for patience and cooperation, stressing that the exercise is aimed at enhancing the long-term reliability of water supply in the region.
