Following his confirmation as running mate by the NPP’s National Council on Thursday, July 4, 2024, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has pledged to help Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia prosecute the ‘breaking the 8 agenda’.
In a statement, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly called NAPO, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Bawumia, the National Council, and the rank and file of the NPP for the confidence he reposed in him to be the party’s vice presidential candidate.
“I am deeply honoured today as the chosen running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). I am humbled to be nominated by our distinguished flagbearer, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and endorsed unanimously by the National Council in accordance with the provisions of the NPP constitution,” he said.
“I am privileged and duty-bound to extend my full support to Dr. Bawumia as we work together to realise his visionary agenda of propelling Ghana to greater heights,” he added.
He also thanked President Nana Akufo-Addo for the opportunity to serve in his government for two consecutive terms as minister.
NAPO further implored party members to support Dr. Bawumia and him in their bid to win the December 2024 elections.
“I understand the task ahead requires our collective effort, and I therefore plead with every party member to come on board as we see the mandate of our countrymen and women once again to serve them.”
“As I assume the role of running mate, alongside my esteemed boss, H.E. Dr. Bawumia, I am committed to supporting him to prosecute a formidable 2024 campaign to break the 8-year election cycle and serve our beloved country diligently.”
About Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh
Currently serving as the Minister of Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Matthew Opoku Prempeh was born on May 23, 1968, in Ashanti New Town, as a surburb of Kumasi.
He hails from Pakyi, also in the Ashanti Region.
He completed his elementary education at KNUST Primary and his middle school education at Prempeh College in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.
For his tertiary education, NAPO studied at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he majored in human biology and medicine, earning his MB CHB in 1994.
He pursued postgraduate training in surgery in the UK (MRCS) after completing postgraduate studies in MSc. Clinical Epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences in 1998 and Leadership and Government at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government in 2002.
He served as Minister for Education between 2017 and 2020 and Minister for Energy from 2021 to date.
He is a medical doctor by profession and served as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2003.
He has also served on a number of committees since entering parliament in 2008.
