The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma, has said that she is still in charge as the Chairperson of the party despite speculations that she has resigned from the position.
Narrating events leading to her alleged forced ousting to the press on Thursday, December 7, 2023, Madam Sarpong Kumankuma said that the party had met in Kumasi last weekend to deliberate on their electioneering strategies for 2024, when she was confronted by some members of the party to resign from her current post.
She said she firmly resisted resigning because she didn’t know what she had done wrong that deserved her resignation.
According to her, her opponents have claimed that she did not involve them in her visits to most constituencies and regions across the country while purportedly violating the party’s code of conduct.
“They had brought in a big box that supposedly carried the petitions they had made for me. Hajia Hamdatu read hers about a fundraising event that she didn’t understand and this was thrown somewhere. They said that when they visit the regions, they do not see the organisers and executives, and so they did not understand the mobilisation work that I went around encouraging many to do; they did not understand, and they had filed a motion that I resign, but then we all know that the country is governed by laws, and due to that, if you don’t even want my stay, you should use legal means to get me out, not dubious,” she told the press.
She referred the agitators within the party to Article 82 of the CPP’s constitution, which stated what one has to do in such situations.
She said even before the one who petitioned her to resign could do that, she had to first go to the Central Committee to state his or her claims, and if the Committee acceded to their claims, he or she could then proceed and petition her to resign.
The chairperson continued that the accuser should possess some qualities that show that he or she is indeed a member in good standing within the party who pays his or her dues regularly, among several other qualities.
She disclosed that in the said meeting, attempts by her to walk out were resisted by some individuals, and it took the intervention of the police to restore calm.
Madam Sarpong Kumankuma accused one Kwaku Duah of being behind the petition that led to most executives resigning.
However, she reiterated that she would not resign because she had not done anything wrong.
She revealed that the Council of Elders of the party, of which she is a member, has accepted the resignation of the outgoing executives and is presently restructuring the party to boost their electoral fortunes and wrestle power from the ruling NPP in the 2024 elections.
“We have seen the work they have each done for the party. [Moses] Yirimambo Ambing, [Nana] Yaa Jantuah, Aisha [Futa], and Osei Kofi [Acquah] were on the radio every day, preaching and defending the party. We accept their resignation, but that notwithstanding, I will consult the Council of Elders on the way forward.”
Although she admitted that every party faces some level of internal resistance from its own members, she argued that that should not compel its executives to vacate their posts.
Madam Sarpong Kumankuma assured the public that the CPP is bouncing back strongly and will obtain over six million votes in the upcoming general elections.
