John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as President of the Republic of Ghana in a vibrant ceremony at the Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
The event attracted a wide cross-section of Ghanaians, alongside numerous state officials, African heads of state, and global leaders.
Mr. Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a decisive victory over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the December 7 elections, winning over 57% of the votes while Dr. Bawumia garnered nearly 40%.
Upon their arrival at the event grounds, both President Mahama and Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman were sworn into office by Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo. At the behest of Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, the Chief Justice administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office.
In his inaugural address, Mahama highlighted the cordial relationship between himself and outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, recalling their shared experiences in Parliament since 1996. “While we belong to opposing political parties, we shared a sense of mutual respect. You have, without exception, been a worthy opponent,” President Mahama remarked.
“It feels fitting that I share this stage and unique historical distinction with Nana Akufo-Addo once again,” he said, recalling his handover of power to Mr. Akufo-Addo eight years ago.
President Mahama also praised outgoing Vice President Dr. Bawumia for his sportsmanship in conceding early following his electoral defeat. Mahama acknowledged that Bawumia’s swift concession helped ease post-election tensions, facilitating a smooth transition to the new administration.
The President reiterated his commitment to implementing 26 key policies within his first 120 days, as outlined in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto. He also addressed global economic trends, emphasising the strategic positioning of Ghana to leverage opportunities within the BRICS economic bloc.
“Our initial efforts will focus on four critical areas: economic restoration and stabilisation of the macroeconomic environment; improvement of the business and investment climate; governance and constitutional reforms; and accountability and the fight against corruption,” the President further disclosed.
He reaffirmed his commitment to his flagship 24-hour economic policy, pledging to prioritise its rollout, especially in the agricultural and agribusiness sectors. He called on the private sector to embrace the initiative, emphasising its potential to drive economic growth.
Additionally, President Mahama expressed his dedication to empowering women and advancing gender equality, highlighting the historic appointment of Ghana’s first female vice president, Prof. Opoku-Agyeman.
The special guest of honour was Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The ceremony was attended by incoming First Lady Lordina Mahama, members of President Mahama’s family, and figures from the outgoing administration, including Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia, and their spouses.
Also present were members of Parliament, past and present executives of the NDC, and representatives from the diplomatic corps.
