Four worker unions at the tertiary level have threatened to embark on a strike on October 5 should the government fail to resolve all pending payments due them.
In a statement, the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG), Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), and the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) demanded that the government pay their 2022 book and research allowance, online teaching support allowance, and other non-payroll allowances within a week’s time.
They also called for the implementation of an earlier agreement on market premium or a review of the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2023.
The joint unions further accused the senior management of public universities of excluding vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowance in the computation of their fuel allowance, only using the ex-pump rate.
Accordingly, the unions noted that the only option that will prompt the government to heed their demands is a strike, adding that it is not their wish to disrupt the academic calendar.
“We know the language that easily sinks into their psyche, and we will speak it in one (1) week if they fail to heed our own agreement with us.”
“The unions also take this opportunity to advise the employer to be circumspect as we do not take delight in disrupting the academic calendar. Nevertheless, when compelled to do so, we will not hesitate, “they added.
