The Medicare Foundation, a UK and Ghana-based nonprofit focused on promoting health and wellness, made a significant donation of medical supplies worth thousands of pounds to the Madina and Adabraka Polyclinics on Monday, November 4.
This donation forms part of the Foundation’s efforts to support healthcare facilities in Ghana, following their recent health fair and blood drive in Accra.
At the Madina Polyclinic-Kekele, founder of the Medicare Foundation, Naana Hagan-Cherry, explained the organisation’s mission. “Our mission is to promote good health and well-being,” she stated.
“During our health fair and blood drive, doctors from the Madina Polyclinic assisted us, so it felt right to support them in return,” she added.
Naana highlighted that the supplies were meant to help ease the clinic’s burden, adding that the items donated were general medical supplies suitable for various departments and patient needs.
“These are very generic medical supplies; they can be used on any unit at all,” she clarified.
Health Services Administrator of Madina Polyclinic Kekele, Selina Gyamfua Abrefa, on behalf of the facility’s management expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation, acknowledging the strain on the facility’s resources due to high patient volume.
“We are overwhelmed with all these items. We believe it will go a long way to serve our clients,” she shared.
Selina also took the opportunity to announce and invite the foundation to the polyclinic’s upcoming 50th-anniversary celebration, set to begin on November 11, with a grand durbar scheduled for November 15.
She expressed hope that future assistance would help the clinic establish its own theatre, as the absence of one requires them to refer complicated cases, sometimes resulting in critical delays for patients.
The Medicare Foundation also extended its support to the Adabraka Polyclinic.
Alexander Hagan-Cherry, co-founder of the Medicare Foundation, explained the Foundation’s broader goals, which include supporting sickle cell patients and promoting blood donations.
“We came to Ghana to do an event, and then we decided to come here today to give them some donations to cover some overhead costs, so they can have time and peace in their work,” Alexander noted.
He emphasized the importance of prayer and support, which, he believes, allows the Foundation to mobilise resources effectively. “With God, all things are possible. If people pray for us, then these supplies will come to us, and we’ll bring them to those who need them most.”
Receiving the items, management of the polyclinic voiced the clinic’s appreciation for the gesture, stating, “We are overwhelmed by this because we were not expecting it,” while urging additional support for the facility.
Adabraka echoed Madina Polyclinic’s sentiments about the need for a well-equipped theatre, which could help the clinic expand its services and potentially transition into a hospital.
