Mobile money records 1.05 billion transactions worth GH¢518.8 billion in August

Mobile money transaction volume and value recorded strong activity in August 2026, with 1.046 billion transactions valued at GH¢518.8 billion, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

Registered mobile money accounts reached 85.8 million in August, while active accounts stood at 26.4 million. The number of registered agents was 983,000, of which 594,000 were active.

Mobile money float stood at GH¢39.8 billion during the month, reflecting the funds held within the mobile money ecosystem.

The data also showed continued activity across other digital payment channels. Mobile Money Interoperability recorded 35.7 million transactions valued at GH¢6.5 billion, while the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems processed 20.495 million transactions worth GH¢95.06 billion.

Internet banking transactions amounted to GH¢41.5 billion across 1.094 million transactions. Point-of-sale terminals stood at 25,843, while automated teller machines numbered 2,276.

The number of debit cards in circulation reached 6.0 million, compared with 81,000 credit cards and 853,000 prepaid cards.

The scale of transactions recorded through mobile money came alongside continued expansion in the banking sector. Total banking sector assets stood at GH¢500.2 billion in August, representing a 20.5% increase from a year earlier. Deposits rose 20.7% to GH¢362.2 billion, while total advances increased 35.5% to GH¢129.2 billion.

Private sector credit also increased by 35.5% year-on-year to GH¢123.3 billion, according to the central bank.
