The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, has announced strict eligibility requirements for members seeking to contest internal party positions while holding government appointments.

Addressing the press in Accra, Mr Kwetey said the National Executive Committee (NEC) had approved the provisions in line with Article 54 of the party’s constitution and that they would be enforced without exception.

“Any person seeking to contest for a party position who currently holds an office to which he or she was appointed by the president or government must resign from that office at least six clear months before filing nomination forms,” he said.

The affected categories include ministers and deputy ministers, chief executive officers and their deputies, as well as metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives. Board chairpersons and members, however, are exempt as they are not full-time employees.

Mr Kwetey further outlined clear resignation deadlines for aspirants at different levels of the party.

“Those intending to contest at a constituency level shall resign by April 2026. Those intending to contest at the regional level shall resign by May 2026. And those intending to contest at a national level shall resign by June 2026,” he stated.

He emphasised that the rules were final and not subject to negotiation.

“These provisions are firm, constitutional and will be enforced without exception,” Mr Kwetey warned.

As part of reforms to enhance transparency and accountability, the General Secretary announced that all payments and election-related transactions would be processed through the party’s official digital platform.

“All financial transactions, including the payment of member dues, donations and filing fees, must be completed at www.ndc.org.gh,” he said, adding that non-smartphone users could access services via the USSD code 92025#.

Mr Kwetey concluded with a call for discipline and unity, stressing that the reorganisation was about strengthening the party rather than personal ambition.

“The objective is not merely to elect officers but to strengthen the party,” he said.
