The National Democratic Congress has emphasised that, although it supports in principle the proposed changes to the electoral rules by the Electoral Commission, it is against the timing of the process.
In a statement on Tuesday, the party said that an announcement by deputy EC Chair Eric Bossman Asare that the 2024 elections will be brought forward to November, among other reforms, does not reflect the agreement reached by parties at a recently held IPAC meeting.
“The announcement by Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson Corporate Services of the EC, does not reflect the irrefutable arguments that led to a consensus that any major electoral reforms should become effective from November 2028.”
“Whereas there was a clear consensus that 2028 should become a year of effectiveness, it is untrue that the majority of political parties at IPAC agreed to the November 2024 date,” the statement said.
The part described as “strange but unexpected” Dr. Asare’s assertion that more than 60% of political parties at IPAC agreed to a November 2024 date.
“Out of the ten political parties represented at the IPAC, at least five (five) spoke eloquently against changing the date for elections to November 2024.
The party also urged the EC to release a calendar outlining its activities in the run-up to the December elections.
