On Thursday, March 7, 2024, a delegation of national executives of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party in Nigeria visited its counterpart in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to share some ideas in the area of political governance.
The 10-member APC delegation was headed by its national chairman, H. E. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, PhD, CON, who spoke on behalf of the delegation.
The visitors first had a closed-door meeting with some National Executive Council members of the NPP before being later allowed to engage with the Ghanaian media to explain the purpose of their visit.
Chairman of the APC, H. E. Ganduje, said that history was made and has repeated itself because the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria is one of brotherhood, which has lasted since the colonial days.
He said there was a need to appreciate the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Stephen Ayesu Ntim, for seeing the need for the two ruling parties to have a closer relationship between themselves by earlier visiting them in Nigera.
Chairman Ganduje believes it’s fair for his party to reciprocate Mr. Ntim’s gesture towards fostering collaboration between the two parties and sharing experiences to ensure good governance in the West African subregion.
According to him, Ghana and Nigeria seemed to have the same political history during the time of the struggle for independence, urging a special recognition of those who stood on the front lines to fight for the independence of the two countries.
“We found it so important to institutionalise the relationship between two ruling parties; we have the same political history right during the time of the struggle for independence, and we have to pray for our elders who struggled for independence for the two countries, mentioning Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory and Sir Abubakar Bawa Salia of blessed memory, among several others”.
“Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory, Sir Abubakar Bawa Salia of blessed memory, all these were the people who struggled for independence in Nigeria and in Ghana; we have similar histories and laid the foundation for independence that gave birth to democratic governance in our two countries,” he added.
H.E. Ganduje further stated that though ruling parties do have power now, they also face lots of challenges that make ruling a problem for them, and that there was a need for the two countries to share experiences on how to overcome those challenges and rule effectively.
