The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has launched the 2025 Consumer Week Celebration under the theme “LPG: A Sustainable Energy for a Better Tomorrow,” reaffirming its commitment to safety, accessibility, and sustainability in Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector.
The event, held in Ashaiman, brought together policymakers, industry players, and consumers to highlight the benefits of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a cleaner and safer alternative to charcoal and firewood, while also strengthening public education on safety and responsible use.
Delivering the welcome address, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Dr Ernest Norgbey, underscored the need to expand gas exchange points within the municipality to enhance convenience and safety for residents.
“Increasing gas exchange centres in Ashaiman will reduce overcrowding at current stations and minimise risks associated with long-distance travel for refills,” he said. “We assure the NPA of our full cooperation in making this initiative a success for the people of Ashaiman.”
The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Mr Kofi Kapito, commended the government’s efforts to improve consumer access to LPG, announcing plans for the introduction of cylinder exchange stations.
“This initiative is a game changer. I commend the President for supporting this forward-thinking move that makes refilling faster, safer, and more efficient,” he stated.
Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Mr Godwin Kodjoe Tamoklo, Esq., outlined the Authority’s ongoing measures to protect consumers and promote clean energy adoption.
“The NPA’s core mandate is to ensure the safety, quality, and affordability of petroleum products,” he said. “Through the Cylinder Recirculation Model, we aim to make LPG the preferred household energy choice by ensuring every cylinder is safely filled, inspected, and distributed through licensed plants.”
He added that the Authority is expanding public education campaigns in schools and communities to promote safe LPG use and consumer rights, in line with the government’s 24-hour economy initiative and Ghana’s Green Transition goals.
Representing the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr Richard Gyan Mensah emphasized that LPG remains central to Ghana’s clean energy agenda.
“LPG offers an efficient, environmentally friendly alternative that reduces deforestation, pollution, and health risks,” he noted. “For the next two years, the Ministry will distribute 457,000 LPG cookstoves and accessories under the National LPG Promotion Programme to ensure 50% national access by 2030.”
The event also showcased live demonstrations on fire safety and proper LPG handling, underscoring the importance of balancing sustainability with consumer safety.
