The government has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic deaths of eight individuals, reportedly illegal miners, following a violent clash at a mining site in Obuasi.
In a statement released on Sunday, January 19, 2025, Acting Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for an immediate investigation into the incident.
“The President has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice,” the statement read.
In addition to initiating the probe, the government has instructed AngloGold Ashanti, operators of the mining site, to fully cover the medical expenses of those injured and to assist with burial arrangements for the deceased.
Meanwhile, the President has tasked security agencies with restoring peace to the area and implementing measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
This swift response underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring accountability in the wake of the tragic event. Further updates on the investigation are expected in the coming days.
