Nana Agyeman Prempeh, Executive Director of Mediation and Arbitration at the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) Ghana, has called for urgent legislative action to empower the agency amid persistent high prices in the market.
The CPA has long advocated for the bill, which, if passed, would provide it with stronger enforcement powers, including the ability to sanction companies that engage in unfair practices and price manipulation.
Speaking on the challenges faced by consumers, Nana Prempeh noted that while the government has worked to stabilise the cedi and reduce inflation, traders continue to set prices at their discretion due to the absence of a formal price control system.
“In the face of rising prices, consumers must remain vigilant,” he told the media on Thursday.
“Even though the cedi has stabilised, local traders have yet to reflect this in the prices of goods and services because Ghana does not have an effective price regulation system,” he added.
He further highlighted that the lack of a legal framework hampers the CPA from fully protecting consumer rights.
“The Consumer Protection Agency is a non-governmental organisation with a clear mandate to safeguard consumers. However, without the passage of the Consumer Protection Bill, we lack the legal authority to hold businesses accountable,” Nana Prempeh said.
