The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has outlined safety measures for individuals, especially those with respiratory difficulties, amid the current unfavourable weather.
This follows a report by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) warning that temperatures will rise in March and April 2024.
In a press statement on February 25, 2024, the GHS said the safety measures will help to reduce the effects of respiratory diseases and meningitis during harsh weather conditions.
“The Ghana Health Service (GHS) appreciates that persons with asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions may suffer attacks or may experience worsening of their conditions,” the statement advised.
The GHS recommended some measures to minimise the effect of the harsh weather conditions, including limiting outdoor activities, especially for children and the elderly; wearing face masks to reduce exposure to dust; and staying hydrated by drinking a lot of water throughout the day.
Also, it encouraged people living with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma to continue to take their prescribed medications.
“We urge the public to observe these recommendations during this period of harsh weather conditions and report to the nearest health facility when they have difficulty breathing,” the statement added.
The statement predicted an increased risk of meningitis, especially among people in Northern Ghana, adding that people who already have meningitis and related conditions should visit a health facility for treatment.
The GHS noted further that efforts will be made to identify and respond to any potential outbreaks the harsh weather may cause in the coming months.
