The Tema General Hospital has denied claims that a baby has died at their facility due to a recent power outage.
A viral video of alleged inconvenienced preterm babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Tema General Hospital due to “dumsor” dominated social media on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, some local media outlets reported that one baby in the NICU had passed away, purportedly due to the power outage.
But, in a statement on Wednesday, management of Tema General Hospital said that although there was a power outage as reported, there was a standby generator at the hospital.
However, according to the hospital, some technical challenges lasting about 2 hours affected the timely starting of the generator.
“The dedicated generator set up at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) tripped off for a short period, and the hospital’s electricians worked to restore power to the hospital until the national grid was restored.”
“It must be emphasised that power was restored to the hospital within two hours by electricians at the facility,” the statement noted in part.
Tema General Hospital further affirmed that “no lives were lost as a result of the power outage.”
