The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party has reacted to the 3-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest by Democracy Hub.
Whereas the party condemned the police maltreatment that characterized the first day of the protest, the NPP argued that it couldn’t point to the real concerns of the demonstrators.
The NPP stated that the issue raised by the group in poor road networks, poor state of the motorway, and rising cost of living, and other politically-related issues.
“I tried so hard in the 3 days of the protest to take home the most salient reason and demand for the protest, but nothing concrete. Except for the usual rhetoric of fix the road, motorway, cost of living and other tangentials, which borders on politics”, NPP National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha said in a statement.
Salam Mustapha attributed the present economic predicaments to the external factors of COVID-19 and the Ukrainian war which he said had affected most economies, including the United States.
“We have all been affected by the hardships brought upon us due to the economic crisis we have been through since 2021. It’s imperative to point to the ravaging consequences of Covid-19 and the current supply chain disruptions caused by the war in Eastern Europe.”
He stated that although they are seeking a better standard of living for Ghanaians, it is important to appreciate the significant steps made by the current administration in improving the lives of the Ghanaian people.
“It is okay to criticize this government. We are human and have flaws, but in terms of infrastructural development, youth employment and support, and investment in the digital economy, no government comes close to the Akufo Addo/Bawumia government. Yet I understand the economic difficulties make it difficult to appreciate the vast improvement we have witnessed in this country under the Akufo-Addo government” , he added.
