Yafo Institute has launched “Yonathan Akwantuo”, an Asante Twi translation of A Free Market Odyssey: Jonathan Gullible, originally authored by American economist and professor Ken Schoolland.
During the virtual book launch on January 4, 2025, Yafo Institute President, Nathaniel Dwamena, emphasized the significance of introducing younger generations to the principles of liberty and free markets. He highlighted the importance of translating the book into Asante Twi, the most widely spoken native language in Ghana, to make economic concepts accessible to students.
Mr. Dwamena announced that 1,000 copies of Yonathan Akwantuo would be distributed free of charge to both private and public schools that teach Asante Twi. The goal is to ensure that young students can engage with economic ideas through relatable short stories in their native language.
“So we have about 1,000 copies of the books, and the second phase is going to be about distribution. We are going to distribute them across schools. We are going to work with private schools, and maybe some public schools. Beyond the initial 1,000 copies, once the demand is high, we shall make more copies available. We are willing to waive copyright for local partners who wish to print more and assist us,” Mr. Dwamena explained.
Addressing challenges in distributing books to some public schools, Mr. Dwamena cited bureaucratic hurdles but reassured that schools with established relationships with Yafo Institute would receive copies. He urged interested public schools to reach out for collaboration.
“We urge other interested public schools to contact us via email for necessary arrangements,” he stated, adding that rural schools were also among the target beneficiaries.
To enhance classroom usage, the book includes teaching guides, commentary, and Q&A sections to aid teachers. Yafo Institute also plans to conduct capacity-building training for teachers to deepen their understanding of free market principles.
As part of efforts to engage communities, essay contests with cash prizes will be organized to inspire student interest in economics and free markets. Schools and communities will also have the opportunity to provide feedback via email.
Additionally, Mr. Dwamena disclosed plans to release an e-book version of Yonathan Akwantuo, which will soon be available on the Yafo Institute website for both local and international readers.
He called on local partners, educational institutions, and government agencies to support the initiative and encouraged Asante Twi teachers to incorporate the book into their curriculum.
“We have Atlas Network, Liberty International, The Atlas Society, New Intellectual Network, and Alumni for Liberty. They are all foreign partners; our doors are open for local partners,” Mr. Dwamena concluded.
