Independent poly think tank, YAFO Institute, has published its 2024 annual report, titled Let Liberty Shine, outlining a year of significant policy advocacy, research-backed reforms, and organisational achievements in promoting free enterprise and civil liberties in Ghana.
The report details the institute’s efforts in research and policy advocacy through initiatives such as the Policy Dialogue Series, aimed at educating the public on key government policies and their economic and social impact.
YAFO’s policy reform focus areas in 2024 included the Planting for Food & Jobs programme, employment initiatives such as NABCO, NEIP, and YOUSTART, as well as policies on regional reorganisation, the Zongo Development Fund, and free senior high school policy.
Additionally, the institute continued its advocacy against so-called ‘nuisance taxes’ like the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), the Emission Tax, and the COVID-19 tax through platforms like Change.org.
Despite challenges in pushing for policy reforms in a politically charged environment, the YAFO Institute reaffirmed its commitment to free-market principles, emphasising individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government intervention. This dedication earned the organisation the prestigious Africa Tank Shark Tank Award 2024, presented by the Atlas Network in Tanzania.
Speaking on the report, YAFO Institute President Nathaniel Dwamena reiterated the need for stronger collaboration among free-market organisations to safeguard liberty in Ghana. “
The tenets of liberty are broad yet bleeding in Ghana,” Dwamena stated.
“Ghanaians want to see their property rights upheld, lower taxes, less government intrusion, and fewer regulatory barriers to prosperity,” he added.
