Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission in charge of operations, has announced that the EC will from today, August 20 exhibit the voters’ register in readiness for the December polls.
According to him, the exercise will start on the 20th of August 2024 and end on the 27th of August 2024.
Speaking to the media on Monday, August 19, Dr. Bossman Asare emphasised the significance of the exercise and called on all Ghanaians to take part in it so that they can be able to cross-check their information on the register to ascertain whether or not the information on the register is accurate and shall not hinder them from voting in the elections.
“The exercise will take place at all polling stations in all 268 districts nationwide. The exhibition exercise is one of the main activities the commission is required to perform ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections,” Dr. Bossman Asare said.
The exercise he submitted aims to correct the provisional voter register for the 2024 elections, ensuring its robustness and credibility, as the current register is provisional and not final.
He noted further that “after the exhibition exercise, the register will be accurate and credible, and this will result in the final register, which will be used for the elections.
He also explained why the provisional voter register was not or has not been given to all the various political parties involved in the race, stating that the commission is expected to give the register to the parties three months before the general elections.
“We have heard in sections of the media that the commission has not given the provisional voter register to the political parties after informing the parties to bring the external drives we want to place on record that per regulation 22 of CI 91 as amended by CI 126, the commission is required to give the provisional voter register to the political parties not later than three months from the end of the registration period.”
“As you may be aware, the limited registration ended on the 29th of May 2024, and the mop-up registration ended on the 3rd of August 2024. On the basis of the limited registration, the commission has until the end of August 2024 to give the provisional voter register to the political parties,” he clarified.
Dr. Bossman stated that in view of the above-explained point, the commission has started issuing the provisional voter register to all the political parties involved and that the opposition National Democratic Congress has come for theirs, alongside other parties.
The Deputy EC Chair urged Ghanaians to visit exhibition centres to verify their names and spelling, among others.
Further, he encouraged voters to report names of deceased family members and minors registered for upcoming elections to electoral officers for removal from their lists.
