The 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for regular school has officially commenced across the country.
In contrast to previous years, the exams are only being written in Ghana for the third consecutive year due to the COVID-related disruption of academic activities.
A total of 460,611 candidates, made up of 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 schools, are sitting the examination at 1,000 centres across the country.
Due to large numbers, candidates were grouped for paper writing, but invigilators thoroughly searched them before they entered the examination halls.
A heavy security presence was present at examination centres, with personnel from the Police, Fire, Prisons, and Immigration Service ensuring there is peace and order.
The examination coordinating body, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has given an assurance to relevant stakeholders and the public of enhanced security procedures aimed at ensuring the integrity and orderly conduct of the examination.
WAEC has also cautioned heads of schools, supervisors, and invigilators to desist from any form of malpractice or cheating schemes, as those involved would be dealt with according to the rules and regulations of the examination.
The Council said it would not hesitate to nullify the entries of candidates connected with the malpractice or cheating or cancel their entire results.
