The Electoral Commission has announced that it will conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The decision, according to the EC, is part of efforts to resolve an ongoing dispute between the two leading political parties—the NDC and the NPP—over the results of the December 7 general elections in the constituency.
In a statement issued on July 2, the EC said the move followed “extensive deliberations” with representatives of the NDC and NPP held on July 1, 2025. The meeting was a continuation of earlier discussions aimed at addressing the stalemate over the parliamentary results in Ablekuma North.
The disagreement stems from the use of scanned pink sheets provided by the NPP for collation purposes after original documents were destroyed during a disturbance at the constituency collation centre. “Political Party supporters besieged our Collation Centre and destroyed a number of the Pink Sheets for the Ablekuma North Parliamentary Election,” the Commission recalled.
The NDC has insisted that a fresh election be held in 37 polling stations, arguing that the scanned pink sheets used in the collation were provided solely by the NPP. On the other hand, the NPP has maintained that only the results from three outstanding polling stations need to be collated and a winner declared, noting that “the NDC Agents had verified and confirmed the scanned Polling Station results they presented.”
However, the EC explained that although agents of both parties approved the scanned results from 37 polling stations, only 18 of those were subsequently verified and confirmed by the respective presiding officers. As such, those 18 polling stations will not be affected by the rerun.
“It is instructive to note that the Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officers’ verification and confirmation for 18 scanned Polling Station results—Agents of both parties also approved same. A rerun will therefore not be held in those Polling Stations,” said Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC.
The rerun, therefore, will cover only the remaining 19 polling stations whose scanned pink sheets lacked confirmation from the original presiding officers.
The EC has assured the public of its commitment to transparency, fairness, and integrity in resolving the matter.
It also expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security to ensure a peaceful electoral process on the scheduled date.
