“On behalf of my husband, my family, my team, volunteers, the media, and the Ghana Tourism Authority, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in this singathon attempt.”
“This was a mere dream that was visualised in just a period of five days, I say, just because I don’t even remember how it started, not to mention how it ended.”
“We hope and believe that this will be an inspiration to all women and all youth or individuals to come out of their comfort zone and try new opportunities. There is a lot out there to do; when you put your mind to it, you will achieve it.”
These were the final words of Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum on stage at the Akwaaba Village in Accra after a harrowing 5-day singathon attempt, equivalent to 126 hours and 52 minutes.
The medical lead of Asantewaa’s project, Dr. Grace Buckman, affirmed that although Afua, a journalist, events promoter, and women’s and children’s advocate, had planned to end the challenge at 12 p.m. today, they were forced to end it earlier on account of Afua’s health.
Afua Asantewaa started the singathon challenge at 12 a.m. on December 24, 2023, with a few patrons at the Akwaaba Village to support her.
However, as the days wore on, many Ghanaians, including entertainment icons, thronged the Village to lend their support to the family woman who challenged herself to these daring feet.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his delegation were there on Sunday, December 24th, to motivate her.
Afua Asantewaa reportedly assembled a team of about 80 professionals in various fields, including audio-visual, voice coaching, medical, and logistics, ensuring she outsold the current record of 105 hours set by India’s Sunil Waghmare.
In an interview with the press on Wednesday, Afua’s husband, Kofi Aduonum, also a journalist with the Daily Guide newspaper, recounted the sacrifices they have had to make to participate in the singathon, including denying their kids a proper Christmas treat.
Some sections of Ghanaians had criticised Afua for not delivering as a professional singer would, but some had also downplayed those criticisms, stating that Afua’s team is working according to the rules of the competition and their own strategy.
Guinness World Records (GWR) is set to make an official announcement confirming their new record of Afua Asantewaa or otherwise.
But even before the announcement, Afua and her team have announced that they will be holding an all-white party today, December 29, 2023, at 6 p.m. at the Akwaaba to thank the citizenry for their immense support.
