Aka9pɛ: Bawumia launches new campaign slogan as he files NPP nomination

NPP flagbearer hopeful Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled a new campaign slogan, #Aka9pɛ, as he officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The slogan, shared across the former vice-president’s official social media platforms, is inspired by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in the 2024 polls, where the party secured 41.7% of the vote.

According to the campaign, the message behind the phrase highlights the need for the NPP to secure an additional 9% to cross the 50%+1 threshold required to win power in 2028.

In the 2024 elections, the NPP lost by more than 1.7 million votes, a result many within the party have attributed to voter apathy and internal disaffection, though the official post-election review committee is yet to release its findings.

Dr Bawumia’s nomination day drew significant attention at the NPP’s Asylum Down headquarters in Accra. Hundreds of party supporters thronged the venue, waving party flags and chanting slogans.

The crowd included current and former ministers, Members of Parliament, and other senior party figures who openly declared their support for his bid.

Dr Bawumia faces stiff competition for the flagbearer slot. Other high-profile aspirants include former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
