Ayawaso East votes today as 40,000 elect new MP in by-election

More than 40,000 registered voters in Ayawaso East are expected to head to the polls on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the constituency’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, leaving the seat vacant.

Following their internal primaries, the New Patriotic Party selected Baba Ali as its candidate, while the National Democratic Congress picked former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, to contest the seat.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has assured residents of a smooth and orderly voting process.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 2, the EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, said all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a credible election. The Commission also cautioned against unlawful acts, particularly vote-buying, warning that any proven case of electoral malpractice would attract sanctions.

“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, so when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, then the commission will make a decision,” he said.

Security personnel have been deployed to polling stations across the constituency to maintain law and order throughout the voting process.
