President Nana Akufo-Addo has reacted to the widely circulated ‘Agyapadie’ document, describing it as a fabricated document by his political opponents to taint his reputation.

The ‘Agyapadie’ document claims a grand scheme by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially people affiliated with the President’s family, to amass state assets in order to gain unmatched influence.

Copies of the Agyapadie had earlier been released in the public domain in 2017 and 2020, while page extracts of the supposed scheme have been shared on social media by critics of the government.

But responding to the allegations at “The Ghana Report Summit” on August 1, organised by The Ghana Report news portal under the theme “Dealing with Misinformation and Disinformation—Elections 2024,” President Akufo-Addo said the accusation is framed up to tarnish his image.

“This baseless accusation is yet another example of the malicious tactics used to undermine my credibility and integrity,” he asserted.

According to him, similar accusations were made against his personality in previous election years, targeted at discrediting him and denting his presidential bid.

“In the run-up to the 2008, 2012, and 2016 presidential elections, I was a target of numerous false and malicious stories attacking my credibility and integrity. In 2008, baseless allegations of drug trafficking were spread, along with numerous rumours about my health intended to cast doubt on my ability to serve as president.

“Again, the 2012 election saw false reports of my alleged arrest in London for drug possession and fabricated quotes designed to stir ethnic tension. In 2016, it was alleged by sympathisers of the opposition that I had killed my late wife. Today, with a few months until the 2024 elections, they are at it again. The fabricated document entitled ‘Agyapadie’ is being spread around by operatives of the opposition as evidence of a grand scheme by my party to annex the assets of the state,” said the president at the summit.
