The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has appealed to Ghanaians to see reason with them on the proposed tarrif increases.
Speaking to journalists in a forum organised by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for entities under the Commission, the Manager for Corporate Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ghana Water Company Limited, Seth Atiapah, cited the depreciation of the cedi as the foremost reason for the increment.
According to him, although Ghanaians live and do business in Ghana, their materials are bought and paid for in dollars, thereby increasing their production costs.
Mr. Atiapah also bemoaned the threats of business discontinuation from their suppliers due to huge sums owed to them.
Additionally, he stated that the increment has resulted from customers the company has to compensate some in order to reach other customers with water.
“Some of our major pipe lines may have to pass through someone’s farm or house before we can be able to provide portable drinking water to a vast majority of people; these charges have to be absorbed by the company, which initially may not have been part of our budget,” he clarified.
He further revealed that the government has for some time now withdrawn the financial support it offered the company towards defraying its debt.
