Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a significant win in the Akwatia by-election, one of the most hotly contested electoral battles of the year.
According to the Electoral Commission’s certified results, Bediako received 18,199 votes, representing approximately 53.8% of the 33,819 valid votes cast. His nearest competitor, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 15,235 votes, or about 45.0%. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) trailed with 82 votes, roughly 0.2%.
The total ballots cast included 33,819 valid votes and 303 rejected ballots. The by-election was held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, across 119 polling stations in Akwatia, following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year.
Campaigning leading up to the election was intense, with both the NDC and NPP heavily investing resources and manpower. Polls officially closed at 5 p.m., after which sorting and counting took place in the presence of party agents, security officers, and independent observers.
Bediako’s victory sparked jubilant celebrations among NDC supporters, who took to the streets of Akwatia in song and dance to mark the occasion.
