“Black Friday”: Meaning, advantages and disadvantages (Article)
ShareTweetSendShareSend

The phrase “Black Friday,” which first appeared in American culture, refers to the Thursday following Thanksgiving, which falls on November 4.

The Christmas shopping season is said to have begun, and in an effort to draw customers, several stores are running big sales and discounts. There are several origin legends for the name “Black Friday” itself. According to a widely accepted hypothesis, it alludes to the moment when stores would start turning a profit or going “in the black” as a result of higher sales.

Advantages of Black Friday:

  1. Savings & Discounts: Black Friday is known for its enormous savings and exclusive offers. Customers can benefit from large price cuts on a variety of goods, including toys, apparel, appliances, and gadgets.
  2. Early Christmas Shopping: Black Friday is a popular day for individuals to start their Christmas shopping early. Customers can purchase gifts for friends and family at a lesser cost thanks to the reduced rates.
  3. Doorbuster Deals: These are really cheap products that are offered in small amounts by certain stores. These may be particularly tempting to buyers seeking for inexpensive versions of popular goods.
  4. Excitement and Tradition: Black Friday shopping serves as a traditional means for some people to begin the holiday.

Disadvantages of Black Friday:

  1. Crowds and commotion: The commotion and congestion at stores is one of Black Friday’s biggest drawbacks. Huge gatherings can result in long lineups, pushing, and in the worst situations, violent incidents.
  2. Consumption and Impulsive Buying: Because of the apparent urgency of the offers, Black Friday may promote a culture of consumerism in which individuals buy things they may not actually need or make impulsive purchases.
  3. Pressure on Retail Workers: Retail employees may have to work long hours in demanding environments, and Black Friday places a great deal of pressure on them. The pressure and expectations may cause burnout and have a detrimental effect on workers’ wellbeing.
  4. Online Security Issues: Identity theft and phishing schemes are two cyberthreats that may arise due to the growing popularity of online shopping on Black Friday. Customers should exercise caution and make sure that their personal information is secure.
  5. Environmental Impact: Black Friday-related manufacturing and consumption may exacerbate environmental problems, such as rising packaging waste and carbon emissions from transportation.

Online buying has been more popular in recent years, and many stores offer Black Friday offers online as well, which helps ease some of the problems associated with in-store shopping.

But, during this shopping season, it’s crucial for customers to consider the benefits and drawbacks and make wise decisions.
