Residents of Borteyman in the Kpone Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region were filled with pride and optimism as the long-awaited Borteyman Police Station was officially commissioned, marking an important milestone in the community’s quest for improved safety and security.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Wednesday, May 7, was graced by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who is also a resident of Borteyman.

In his address, the Minister highlighted his personal connection to the project and commended the collective efforts that brought the police station to fruition after years of delays.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is with immense pride and a deep sense of personal connection that I stand before you today as both the Minister for Interior and a member of this community to commission the Borteyman Police Station—something that we fought for five and a half years struggling to get commissioned.”

“Now, with four months, we are getting it commissioned,” he stated.

He extended appreciation to the Inspector General of Police and all stakeholders who contributed to the project’s completion, emphasising that the station would serve as a cornerstone for policing and community collaboration.

“This police station is more than just a structure. It stands as a symbol of our shared determination to protect lives, safeguard property, and uphold the rule of law right here in Borteyman,” he added.

The Minister also announced personal contributions to the initiative, including four motorbikes, CCTV installation, and financial support for housing units to accommodate police officers.

He urged residents to support the police and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank the many young men across our country who are supporting the police by identifying crime within their own communities and helping to combat it.”

“Special recognition goes to the Zongo communities here in Accra for the commendable efforts they have made in recent weeks to help curb the drug menace within their neighbourhoods.”

“However, I must also issue a word of caution. While we are pleased that they are assisting in addressing crime, it is important to remember that no one should take the law into their own hands—whether by vandalising property or assaulting individuals in the name of helping the police.”

In a speech read on his behalf, the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, described the new facility as “a symbol of safety, security, and community service.”

He applauded the Borteyman Estate Association for their pivotal role in resourcing and constructing the building, calling it a “clear demonstration and strong desire of goodwill to support the Police to effectively combat crime.”

Mr. Yohuno further urged officers stationed at the new post to prioritise community engagement and responsiveness and to maintain the facility to ensure its longevity.

For his part, President of the Borteyman Estate Association, Mr. Bernard Larbi Amoah, also commended the Interior Minister for his remarkable efforts in securing the station’s commissioning. He recalled the persistent demand for a police station by residents over the years.

“This, our police station, for some time now has been a thorn in our flesh… but it has taken the strong leadership of our honourable minister to speed up the process,” Amoah said.

He emphasized that the station should go beyond enforcing law and order to fostering a partnership based on mutual respect and transparency. “Let this be a place where citizens feel protected and respected,” he added.

Addressing issues of apathy and lawlessness in the community, Amoah called for a renewed sense of civic duty. “Let this mark a day of new beginnings for us all,” he said.

The event was attended by  senior officials of the Ghana Police Service, key community leaders, and members of the Borteyman Estate Association all of whom pledged their support for effective law enforcement and community development.
