The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has removed former Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta from its list of wanted persons after he committed to returning to Ghana on a definite date.
The Special Prosecutor had declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive on February 12, 2025, stating that he had failed to indicate a reasonable time for his return despite being informed that he was under investigation for suspected corruption-related offences. The OSP had directed him to appear in Accra for questioning but said he did not comply.
However, on February 18, 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta, through his lawyers, formally communicated his intention to voluntarily return to Ghana on a specific date.
The OSP described this as “a major shift from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s previous intention of remaining outside the jurisdiction indefinitely.”
Following this development, the OSP deemed his proposed return date reasonable and rescheduled his appearance before investigators. “Consequently, Mr. Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons, and the OSP ceases to consider him a fugitive from justice pending his voluntary return,” the statement said.
The OSP, however, warned that should Mr. Ofori-Atta fail to return as stated or refuse to attend his scheduled interview, he would be reinstated on the wanted list, and “all necessary legal steps” would be taken to secure his return.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, reaffirmed the OSP’s commitment to ensuring accountability “guided by due process and fairness.”
