The government says it has brought Onua FM/TV Morning Show host, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, before the National Media Commission for accusing the President of his involvement in illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
However, the government noted that it is still within its right to forward the matter to court as it deems fit.
In a statement signed by Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, the government noted that “This publication impugns the character and integrity of the President, and the credibility and commitment of his fight against illegal and irresponsible mining.”
“The content propagated in the video is false, malicious, and without basis. It is nothing but an act of unethical and irresponsible journalism,” the statement added.
The government also expressed worry about the increasing spate of disinformation and misinformation “clothed under the pretext of journalistic discretion and free expression”.
Last month, Captain Smart was sued by Metro TV’s Paul Adom-Otchere for similar alleged defamatory statements on his morning show.
Mr. Adom-Otchere demanded, among other things, GHC10 million as compensation for the damage caused to his reputation.
