Catholic Church reaffirms ban on Freemasonry as incompatible with faith

The Catholic Church has reiterated its unwavering stance against Freemasonry, declaring that Catholics cannot simultaneously adhere to the teachings of the Church and be members of Masonic associations.

In a statement released by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Church clarified that its position on Freemasonry remains unchanged and firmly rooted in doctrine.

Archbishop Kwofie highlighted the growing interest in Freemasonry, particularly among Catholic young adults, and emphasized the importance of adhering to Church teachings amidst external influences. Citing Proverbs 22:6, he urged Catholics to remain steadfast in their faith, stressing the Church’s responsibility to guide the younger generation in the path of righteousness.

The archbishop referenced the 1983 “Declaration on Masonic Associations” by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which categorically states that Masonic principles are irreconcilable with Catholic doctrine.

The declaration asserts that Catholics who enrol in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion. Archbishop Kwofie echoed these sentiments, reaffirming that membership in Freemasonry remains strictly forbidden.

The statement also outlined specific contradictions between Freemasonry and Catholicism, including the Masons’ denigration of Jesus Christ by placing Him on the same level as figures like Buddha, Krishna, and Confucius. Prayers directed to Christ are replaced with invocations to the “Great Architect of the Universe,” a practice the Church deems incompatible with Christian faith. Archbishop Kwofie further criticised Freemasonry for equating the Bible with other religious texts, an act he described as “absolutely preposterous.”

Quoting Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters,” Archbishop Kwofie emphasized that Catholics must choose between their faith and Freemasonry, as the two paths are fundamentally incompatible. He urged the faithful to take note of the Church’s teachings and allow the Holy Spirit to guide them toward truth and salvation.

Most Rev. Kwofie concluded by calling on all Catholics to reject any affiliation with Freemasonry and to remain committed to the principles of the Church.
