Collection of unapproved clearance charges illegal – GES to Heads of Senior High Schools

The Ghana Education Service has warned heads of Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical School (SHTS) against collecting unapproved monies from students exiting school.

According to the GES, such practices are illegal. It asked the school heads to refund any such money to students.

“Management wishes to state that such is illegal and cautions heads of school to desist from it and refund any monies collected to the students with immediate effect,” GES said in a statement on 20^th September 2023.

The statement continued that “any head of school found to have collected unauthorised monies from final year students before signing their clearance forms will be severely sanctioned.”.

GES, however, urged school heads to use established procedures for recovering money from destroyed properties from students prior to signing off on their clearance.

“Heads of schools are, however, urged to use the laid-down procedures to surcharge students who have destroyed, lost, or stolen school properties before clearing”, the statement furthered.

The Service charged Regional Directors of Education to communicate this information to all heads of SHS and STHS to ensure strict compliance.
