Ghana’s fight against corruption has not seen any improvement over the past four years, according to the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local branch of Transparency International.
In its 2024 report released on January 30th, Ghana maintained its position of 43 on the corruption perception index, on a scale of 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
The country also ranked 8th out of 49 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), scoring the same as Benin and Senegal.
According to the anti-graft agency, Ghana nonetheless performed better than 39 countries in the SSA, including Burkina Faso (41), South Africa (41), Cote d’Ivoire (40), Tanzania (40), and Lesotho (39).
On the other hand, countries such as Mauritius (51), Namibia (49), and Sao Tome and Principe (45) recorded a fairer index as compared to Ghana, per the report.
Among the top performers in the sub-region were Seychelles (71), Cabo Verde (64), Botswana (59), and Rwanda (53), but Sudan (20), Equatorial Guinea (17), South Sudan (13) and Somalia (12) were perceived as very corrupt.
GII recommended, among other measures, the establishment of an independent, transparent, and well-resourced judiciary and the prevention of abuse of power, bribery, and other forms of corruption as critical to stemming the tide of corruption and achieving high scores.
