Ghanaians have been called to desist from practices that adversely affect the quality of water in the country.
Speaking to the press at Day One of an Open Day Seminar, A senior research scientist of the organising institution, the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Emmanuel Obuobie, lamented that the negative practices of some Ghanaians and companies on water bodies are seriously affecting their quality.
According to him, considering the importance water plays in the lives of people, there is a need to periodically sensitise the general populace on how to properly manage the country’s water resources to ensure water security.
He said water is very important to every area of the economy and that the more healthy the bodies of water are, the more the country can grow in the different sectors or areas Ghana relies on water for.
Despite the above, he observed that some actions and practices by some people and industry operations are compromising the quality of water the country produces.
He disclosed that it was for this reason that the CSIR-WRI had to sit down and design a programme to teach Ghanaians how to properly manage water and water bodies to help maintain their quality.
“So we have specially designed this Open Day as a way of raising awareness among the populace. There are many things that are impeding the quality of water in this country, and we want to draw attention to them and encourage the populace to do what they can within their own capability to enhance the quality of water in this country because the higher the quality of the water, the better it is for all of us,” he said.
The WRI lined up a number of activities from November 1 up until November 28 and 29 for the climax, aimed at creating awareness about the value of water and the need for Ghanaians to protect water resources in the country.
The open day also featured lots of exhibitors, most of whom were from the various departments of the Institute and displayed innovative products and solutions to the admiration of participants.
Dr. Obuobie further ceased the opportunity to invite the whole of Ghana to come to the Institute to patronise its products and solutions and also recommend to others the good works of the Institute.
The two-day Open Day, which began on Tuesday, November 29, 2023, is on the theme, “Ghana’s Water Security: Rethinking the Value of Water.”
