Amid controversies surrounding the effectiveness and public perception of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), President John Dramani Mahama has called on the anti-corruption body to significantly step up its efforts to rebuild trust and demonstrate greater impact in the national fight against corruption.
In a statement issued by his Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President stressed that the OSP must demonstrate greater transparency, decisiveness, and impact in carrying out its mandate.
“The President reiterates his call on the Office of the Special Prosecutor to do more to boost public confidence in its work and frontally tackle corruption in line with the objectives informing its creation,” the statement said.
President Mahama’s renewed call follows his meeting with the National Peace Council on Wednesday, where he reaffirmed the central role of the Special Prosecutor in strengthening Ghana’s anti-graft framework. He emphasised that public trust is vital to the Office’s effectiveness and must be earned through action and outcomes.
As part of measures to reinforce the institution’s legitimacy, the President also directed the Majority Leader and Majority Chief Whip in Parliament to withdraw a Private Member’s Bill seeking to repeal the Act establishing the OSP.
