In a major move to enhance road safety and improve vehicle traceability, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that from January 2026, all vehicle licence plates will be issued in the names of individual owners.
According to the Authority, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen security and accountability within Ghana’s transport ecosystem.
“The vehicle number in the possession of an individual belongs to that individual, who has a responsibility to take off the number plate at a time of change in ownership,” the statement explained.
DVLA further urged vehicle owners to consider their registration numbers as personal identifiers, with the added responsibility of safeguarding them.
“When vehicles are transferred, the immediate owner owes a responsibility to himself to take off the number to allow the new owner to secure an assigned number to be fixed on the vehicle,” it added.
The Authority emphasized that the policy will enable security agencies to link a unique vehicle number to an individual, thereby improving investigations and law enforcement efforts related to road and vehicular crimes.
