The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has assured Ghanaians of the Commission’s readiness to deliver a peaceful, transparent, credible, and fair general election on December 7, 2024.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the EC headquarters in Accra, Mrs. Mensa highlighted the Commission’s successful completion of all preparatory activities leading up to the elections.
She noted that the EC had conducted a nationwide voter registration exercise, which added over nine million new voters to the register. Additionally, the Commission held a comprehensive exhibition of the voters’ register, both manually and electronically, to ensure all eligible voters could verify their information.
“Those who could not visit polling centres were given the opportunity to check their details on the voter register online,” she said, emphasising the EC’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
During the event, which included a visit by heads of various security agencies led by the head of the Electoral Security Taskforce, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the EC Chair disclosed that all registers to be used for the elections had been distributed nationwide and were securely in police custody. However, she noted that registers for the Northern, Bono, and Bono East regions were yet to be delivered but assured they would be dispatched shortly.
Mrs. Mensa reiterated the EC’s determination to uphold its mandate and called on stakeholders to support the Commission in ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
In his remarks, the head of the National Election Security Task Force, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, commended the EC for its meticulous preparation. “We have been with the EC every step of the way and can attest that the institution has put in place the necessary infrastructure for a credible and transparent election,” he said.
Dr. Dampare, who also serves as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), assured Ghanaians of the security agencies’ dedication to ensuring peace and safety throughout the electoral process. “The Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration, Ghana Army, and other security agencies are committed to providing maximum protection to the EC Chairperson, the Commission, and all citizens before, during, and after the elections,” he stated.
The IGP further praised Ghanaians for maintaining peace during the pre-election period and urged them to continue fostering unity. “Let us uphold the peace we’ve enjoyed thus far and carry it through until the entire electoral process is completed,” he appealed.
With these assurances, the EC and the security agencies have reinforced their commitment to delivering a smooth and credible electoral process that upholds Ghana’s democratic values.
